This matrix separates Apple's native display limit from the technology inside a dock. It does not infer support from the number of HDMI or DisplayPort sockets.

These counts describe external displays driven natively by the MacBook. DisplayLink is a separate software-assisted path and does not change the native GPU limit.

Dock transport database
Representative dock behavior on macOS
The database includes positive and negative matches. The MST-only record is intentionally present because it prevents a common two-port, one-extended-display purchase mistake.

Native Thunderbolt
Best when the MacBook already exposes enough native display streams. A dock routes those streams; it does not create new ones.
DisplayLink
Can add software-assisted displays beyond a base chip's native limit, but requires drivers, permissions, and acceptance of workflow tradeoffs.
MST on macOS
A Windows-oriented dual-display MST dock may expose only one extended display on a Mac. Port count is not compatibility proof.
What “verified” means here
Every published row has a manufacturer or Apple source and a verification date. It does not mean Desk Worthy physically tested the hardware. Firmware, macOS releases, adapters, monitor inputs, and regional revisions can still change the result.
